Accelerated Reader Program

The Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program designed to encourage reading and increase comprehension skills.  Accelerated Reader books are available in the Media Center and Spruill Oaks Library. There is a Barnwell binder in the children’s section of the Spruill Library that lists books for which Barnwell has tests.

After reading an AR book, the students will take a computerized test and earn AR points based on how well they did. Students may read the book alone, or someone such as a teacher or parent may read the book to or with the student. The student is responsible for reading the test questions and answers on his or her own to complete the test.

AR tests can be taken on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7:20am – 7:50am in Computer Lab B. There will be a parent volunteer in the lab during those times to assist any students who need help.

We need parent volunteers to help students. If you are available to help during the above times, please contact the PTA.

Many teachers allow students to take AR tests in the classroom, and the Media Center is available for test-taking, also.

The Accelerated Reader tracking mural is located in the hallway outside the cafeteria. The mural is used to track the individual student’s progress. Paw prints with the student’s name are used to move the student around the mural beginning at the Starting Block, over the Log Crossing, to the Pine Tree and Cloud Views, and completing the journey at the Rainbow’s End. Those who reach the Rainbow’s End will earn a permanent Barnwell Bear, which will be placed on the border of the mural with the student’s name and year of achievement.

Each grade will have a Grade Level Coordinator. This person will be responsible for printing point reports for each classroom and moving the paw prints around the AR mural on designated paw print move dates. They will also be responsible for distributing prizes to students for reaching point levels.
